Rope Ascenders are most commonly a mechanical device that attaches to a climbing rope and a Rope Access Technician or Climber to ascend up the rope. Within industry they are mostly used in the construction, building maintenance and rescue scenarios.

Choosing a rope ascender

Ascenders are chosen by where they sit on the body and by rope diameter. A handled ascender does the pulling and takes most of the load. A chest ascender keeps the climber upright and holds position between pulls. A foot or boot ascender drives the leg stroke. Most rope access technicians run a handled and a chest ascender together on 10mm to 13mm kernmantle, and add a foot ascender for long climbs.

Check the rope diameter range against the rope in use before buying. A device rated for 8mm to 13mm will slip on anything thinner and will not close on anything thicker. Handed devices are supplied left or right, and are not interchangeable.

Powered and mechanical ascenders

A powered ascender does the lifting under battery or petrol drive and is chosen where the same climb is repeated, where a load has to be raised, or where a rescue may require lifting a casualty. The ActSafe range covers battery drive for confined and indoor work and petrol drive for remote sites without power. Drill powered ascenders sit between the two, using a cordless drill as the power source.

Mechanical ascenders are the manual devices above. The word describes the cam mechanism, not a motor, and a mechanical ascender needs no charging, no fuel and no service interval beyond inspection.

Do I need a handled ascender, a chest ascender or both?

For rope access climbing you normally use both together. The handled ascender does the pulling and takes most of the load, while the chest ascender keeps you upright on the rope and holds the progress you make between strokes. A foot ascender is an optional third device that takes the strain out of long climbs. For short climbs or hauling gear, a single handled ascender is often enough. Note that handed models come in left and right versions and are not interchangeable.

What is a mechanical ascender?

A mechanical ascender is a manual device that grips the rope with a sprung toothed cam. It slides freely up the rope and locks solid when loaded. Mechanical refers to the cam mechanism, not a motor, so handled, chest and foot ascenders are all mechanical ascenders. They need no charging, no fuel and no servicing beyond routine inspection, which is why they remain the standard choice for most rope access work.

When is a powered ascender worth it over a manual one?

A powered ascender earns its price when the same climb is repeated day after day, when equipment has to be raised along with the climber, or when a rescue plan may call for lifting a casualty rather than lowering them. The battery or petrol drive does the climbing for you, which saves serious time and fatigue on tall structures. For occasional single climbs, a manual setup does the same job at a fraction of the cost.
