When it comes to climbing ropes there are two main types, Static & Dynamic. Static ropes have very little stretch which make them very efficient in rescue like situations where a victim is being lowered, hauling loads or ascending a rope.
Dynamic ropes have been designed to stretch which helps absorb the impacts of falling. Climbing rope is made from Synthetic Polyamides most commonly known as Nylon.
Remember to watch out for sharp edges, so don't forget the rope protectors for your climbing rope!
