Static rope for rope access and rescue
Static rope is built to stretch as little as possible under load. That is what makes it the right rope for rope access, for lowering a casualty, for hauling and for ascending, because the energy you put into the system moves the load rather than being absorbed by the rope. Typical elongation for the ropes on this page is under five percent at working load.
For rope access work in Australia the standard diameter is 11mm. It runs correctly through the ascenders, back up devices and rope grabs used on industrial systems, it handles edge loading better than thinner rope, and it is the diameter most equipment manufacturers specify. The Skylotec UltraStatic and Teufelberger KM-III lines both sit in that band and are stocked in multiple colours so teams can identify the working line from the back up line at a glance.
Choose 13mm where the rope will take a haul system, a heavy load or repeated abrasion. Choose 9mm or 10mm only where the manufacturer of your device specifically allows it.
Kernmantle construction and what it means
Kernmantle rope is built in two parts. The kern is the load bearing core, laid in parallel or lightly twisted filaments, and it carries the great majority of the rope's strength. The mantle is the woven outer sheath, and its job is to protect the core from abrasion, grit, UV and cutting.
The practical consequence is that damage you can see is damage that matters. A cut, glazed or fuzzed sheath means the core underneath is no longer protected, and a rope with a visible core is out of service immediately. It also means sheath slippage, where the mantle moves along the core, is a retirement condition even if the rope looks otherwise sound.
Every industrial rope on this page is kernmantle construction. Laid and three strand ropes have their uses in rigging but they are not used as a working line at height.
Dynamic rope and when you need it
Dynamic rope is designed to stretch, and that stretch is what absorbs the energy of a fall so the load on the anchor and on the body stays inside survivable limits. It is the right rope for lead climbing and for any application where a genuine fall factor exists.
For most industrial rope access it is the wrong choice. Rope access systems are built so the worker is never in a position to take a dynamic fall, the stretch works against you when hauling or ascending, and dynamic rope wears faster in the abrasion conditions industrial work creates. Two dynamic ropes are listed here for the applications that need them.
Accessory cord and prusik
Prusik cord is the small diameter accessory cord used to build friction hitches for back up, progress capture and haul systems. It is not a rope and it is not rated as a working line. Diameter matters more here than anywhere else on the page, because the hitch only grips if the cord is meaningfully thinner than the rope it is tied to. As a rule the cord should be around seventy percent of the diameter of the host rope, so 8mm cord on 11mm rope.
The Teufelberger and Arresta prusik cords listed here are supplied in nylon and in heat resistant aramid. Aramid holds friction better under heat but has a shorter service life and is less forgiving of shock loading.
Choosing rope diameter and length
Diameter is decided by the equipment, not by preference. Check the descender, back up device and rope grab you already own, take the narrowest and widest rope each of them accepts, and buy inside the overlap. The most common industrial answer in Australia is 11mm.
Length is decided by the highest drop you work plus a margin. Take the vertical distance from anchor to landing, add ten to fifteen percent for the anchor rigging, knots and rope stretch, and round up to a stocked length. Spools of 100 and 200 metres are the economical way to buy for a team; cut lengths suit a single system.
Buy two ropes, not one. Industrial rope access works on a working line and an independent back up line, and running both from the same reel makes it harder to tell them apart in use. Different colours are worth the small extra cost.
Rope care, inspection and retirement
Rope is inspected before every use, by running the whole length through your hands and looking for sheath damage, glazing, flat spots, stiffness and any change in diameter. A documented inspection by a competent person is separate from that and is recorded in the rope's log. Use a rope protector to protect the rope from sharp edges during use.
Rope is retired on condition, not only on age. Take a rope out of service after any shock load, any exposure to chemicals or unknown substances, any sheath cut exposing the core, and any point where the diameter has changed. Store rope out of sunlight, dry, away from solvents and battery acid, in a rope bag rather than loose in a vehicle.
Wash rope in cool water with a rope specific cleaner, never in a domestic machine with detergent, and dry it out of direct sun.
